When we have grouped French and Italian restaurants together,
then this is due to the fact that these two cuisines are quite closely related,
especially compared to other more exotic food styles.
Laos having been a French colony in the years of Indochina, the French influence
still lingers on. Not surprisingly so, you’ll find a vast variety of French restaurants
and thanks to the colonial heritage, these places feel more like a part of the Lao tradition
than some artificial, modern invention.
Wine is almost a must with French and Italian cuisine and here Laos is well ahead of much
bigger neighbors such as Thailand when it comes to variety and quality of the wines on offer.
The other good news is that thanks to very low import taxation, wines are very reasonably
priced and most restaurants let you benefit from these low prices.

Le Silapa |
Sihom Rd. Tel. (021) 219 689 |
For most of the
many regular customers here, Le Silapa is simply Vientiane's best choice
when it comes to French cuisine. Set in a small, but elegant townhouse,
Fred and Anthony, the Canadian-born hosts, look after all the clients
with the same care. The prices here are more than correct. |
|
Le Central |
Setthathirath Rd. Tel.: (021) 222
227 |
With its bright and
elegant interior design, Le Central has the touch of a genuine French
Brasserie. Your co-host Yves and Philippe take care that also cuisine

Café des Arts |
Heng Boun Road Tel: (021) 212 260 email:
website:
http://www.cafedesartslaos.com |
This very small, elegantly yet cosy decorated
restaurant is still an "insider tip" for what most regular costumers
believe to be Vientiane's best Italian food. Their home-made pasta is
fantastic and the thin, crusty pizza without doubt the most genuine you
can find here. All at surprisingly low prices and a pleasant chat, in
whatever language you speak, with the Swiss owner Peter is almost always
included for free. |

|
La Gondola
|
Chao Anou Rd. Tel: (021) 264 037 |
La Gondola, just opened at the end of 2005 and is a real Italian
restaurant as the owners/cooks are Italians. Genuine food and a typical
Italian, rather sober ambiance, combined with very low prices make this
small place well worth a try. |
|
L'Opera Italian Restaurant
|
Nam Phu Tel: (021) 215 099 |
For many years the only Italian restaurant in Vientiane, L'Opera is
almost an institution. Wonderful location, directly on the central
Fountain Circle, but as you might expect, L'Opera has become rather
expensive. |

Vientiane. Refined French cuisine in an elegant atmosphere. Not cheap. |
|
Arawan Restaurant Français |
Samsenthai Rd. |
This is by far the
oldest "Falang" restaurant in this country, older than the Lao PDR
itself! The interior decoration seems not to have been changed since
then, but is very well maintained. With its simple, but genuine French
cuisine and very low prices, the Arawan is really an alternative out of
the common and well worth a try. |
|

Besides French
cuisine, Bernard, the lao-born French owner of La Terrasse, also offers
pasta, pizza and even some Mexican dishes. Nice atmosphere and very
reasonable prices. |
|
Le Provençal |
Nam Phu Tel. (021) 219 685 |
Cuisine from
Southern France, but also wood-oven bakes pizzas can be found here. The
prominent location on the Fountain Circle is however also reflected in
very expensive prices. |
