Massage has had a very long tradition in Laos.
The technique applied here – as taught by monks if you look for the real stuff -
is similar to the one in Thailand. All massage parlors thus have “Traditional Lao Massage”
on their menu, most offer also Oil Massage, Aroma Oil Massage, Face Massage and Foot Massage.
The massage business is quite strictly regulated by the government and only places with staff
that have obtained official diplomas may publicly offer massage. As these licenses are also
regularly checked by the authorities, you can be pretty sure to render yourself into the hands
of professionally trained masseuses and masseurs whenever you see the sign “Massage”.
One note must be made when it comes to massage and sex. Unlike in Thailand, where many massage
parlors are hidden brothels, this is not the case in Laos. If you do look for that extra service,
you’ll have to try your luck and might – very rarely – find a masseuse who is willing to secretly
provide a “special” service.
Spas and the like is not only a recent addition to massage salons as for instance sauna has
existed in Laos, despite the tropical climate, long before the invention of the modern “wellness”
business concept. So don’t be surprised to find a sauna even in temples.

Mandarin Body & Soul |
Pangkam Rd. |
Rich, tasteful
decoration in traditional style, matching, discrete fragrance in the air
and only the sound of low, quite music (mobile phones are forbidden in
here!) make you relax already the moment you enter the "Mandarin". Also
the massages provided by very well trained staff live up to this same
high level. Surprisingly cheap, the Mandarin Body & Soul is certainly
one of Vientiane's first addresses for massage. |
|
Holiday Barber |
Chao Anou Rd. Tel. (021) 213 433 |
Set in newly
renovated rooms on the second floor, the "Holiday Barber" offers
traditional and oil massages, but also face or foot massage. At US$ 2.50
for one hour, this is one of the cheapest massage parlours in central
Vientiane, the service offered here, however, still lives up to higher
standards. |
|
Happy Garden |
Heng Boun Rd. Tel. (021) 241 381 |
With more than 30
masseuses - all dressed in the same T-Shirts with daily changing colors
- the Happy Garden is one of Vientiane's biggest massages and has almost
become an institution. Only lao traditional massage is practiced here. |

located next to the Fountain Square, the White Lotus offers all forms of
massage in a nice and very friendly atmosphere. |
|
Wat Po Thai Traditional Massage |
Samsenthai Rd./Heng Boun Rd. |
This small massage
parlour is the place to go if you look for the real traditional massage
as taught my Thai monks. Besides the professional skills, the staff here
is extremely friendly. |
|
Syri Massage |
Nam Phu Tel. (021) 213 132 |
Simple, but very
clean place with well trained, friendly staff. The "specialty" here is
that also for the traditional massage a special massage cream is
applied. Well worth to give the "Syri" a try. |
|
Oasis Massage & Beauty |
Rue François Nginn |
Situated opposite
the Tai-Pan Hotel, the Oasis profits from a very nice location, just
around the corner from the riverfront. Tasteful interior and
professional staff make this a good choice for a relaxing massage. |
|
Mixay Massage |
Quai Fa Ngum Tel. (021) 213 576 |
One of Vientiane's
longest existing massage places. Very basic, but clean interior, the
first time visitor might be a little bit surprised by the lack of
privacy as the carelessly drawn "shower curtains" hardly separate the
single massage beds. But with the cheerful, always smiling massage girls
this usually turns out to become a different, but nevertheless very
pleasant massage experience. |
