Nightclubs have existed in Laos for a long time, so you’ll find quite a big variety of clubs in Vientiane, both well established as well as newer places. What they all have in common is that you can listen and dance to live music. Usually, the bands are rather big – up to 10 musicians is no exception – and often also the guests like to join in for a song or two. The music goes from traditional Lao songs (very pleasant to listen to!) to Lao and Thai Pop up to popular Western songs.

As varied as the songs played are the customers you’ll find there. Old and young, Lao and foreigners make quite an unique mixture. And in between, there are also girls who work in these nightclubs as escorts for the time you spend there. These girls, 20 or 30 per club or so, will sit and dance with you for a modest fee (presently around 18’000 Kip per hour) if you wish so (no hassle). This is fully legal and the fee will even appear on your bill! As prostitution is prohibited by law, the service provided by these girls is limited to the mentioned “sitting and dancing with the customer”. But as most of these nightclubs are located inside hotels, you not need much imagination to figure out how to take things further.
