The addition of genuine discos to Vientiane’s nightlife is rather recent. Laos has had a law that all dancing halls must play a certain amount of live music and also of Lao songs. This law has either been abolished or washed up, as now there are also places where DJ’s play only recorded music. Vientiane4fun lists them here as discos.

Vientiane’s discos are small to medium-sized and their interior design is rather simple. But usually these places are so crowded – especially on weekends – that you will not see a lot of the interior anyhow. Discos are extremely popular with the Vientiane youth and foreigners – tourists and expatriates – are by far a minority. That doesn’t mean at all that “falangs” are not welcome, in fact as Lao people are extremely friendly and many of the young eager to practice their English and get to know Westerners, is easy to make new friends there.
